The varied and outstanding period architecture has placed most of Andes’ Main Street on the National Register of Historic Places. Even though its population has diminished and its character is no longer that of an agrarian center, Andes is still a vigorous hamlet.

The hotel, shops, restaurants and galleries draw people from all over the region. In 2007 the New York State Department of Transportation completed a long-awaited re-construction of Route 28 through Andes, accompanied by a hamlet-wide streetscape project that included new sidewalks, curbs, wastewater drainage, and crosswalks, as well as landscape plantings, benches and vintage lighting. This thriving community is filled with wonderful retail spaces, numerous places to eat, and some great hotels.

In 1905, Arkville became even more of a railroad hub when the Delaware and Eastern, later the Delaware and Northern provided a west bound connection to Margaretville, Andes, The Reservoir Towns, Downsville and East Branch.

Today Arkville is in the midst of a rebirth, with the Delaware and Ulster excursion rail ride, The Catskill Center for Conservation and Development and The Erpf Gallery, the Catskill Forest Association, the Catskill regional office of The Nature Conservatory all within walking distance of each other along Route 28 in the center of Arkville. There is also a gym, a train station with rides in fair weather, a cafe, antiques, and auctions!

In the 1870’s, a railroad up from Kingston was built, eventually known as the Ulster & Delaware Railroad.  It suddenly opened up the area to visitors from New York City, and from much farther away. A trip that had taken many difficult hours (or days) on the rough roads suddenly became a matter of hours.

Many hotels of all sizes existed to serve the early, busy tourism industry here. Overlooking Fleischmanns, straddling the Ulster/Delaware County line, was the fabled Grand Hotel. One of the largest hotels in the Catskills, it drew throngs for many decades. Smaller hotels grew in every nook and corner of the Village, and many private homes took in a few boarders. Another survivor from that era is the Palace Hotel on Wagner Avenue. Due to the growth of the ski industry in the area, Fleischmanns is still graced with many of the virtues that have been bringing visitors up since the 1870’s, and the Village is  continually being rediscovered by subsequent generations of residents and visitors. It has a few great places to eat, an art gallery, as well as plentiful hotels.

Unlike many long treasured destinations, the Town of Roxbury has held onto its unspoiled character and authentic charm. Visit here and the pace of rural life soon settles in. You can catch a really deep breath, stop and take in the deep quiet, and feel yourself reinvigorated in the clean brace of mountain air and the mountain’s sweeping sense of time. In addition to the rural vistas and farmland you’ll see along the township’s two-lane roads, there are three distinct areas within the township itself: the village hamlets of Roxbury and Grand Gorge, and the Denver/Vega Valley.

Today, Roxbury is home to an internationally recognized hotel and spa, as well as a few great bar & restaurants.
