The Re-Store Challenge

This Saturday, Sept 18, on Main Street, Roxbury will be your last chance to see and vote for your favorite Re-Store Design Team. Come and take part in the fun at Cassie’s Cafe with the event kicking off at 4:00 with the judges convening at 5:00.
The judges are Newell Turner, Editor-in-Chief of House Beautiful; Dorothy Maffei of Home Goods of Margaretville; Mike Reidlinger, art teacher at Roxbury Central School, Greg Henderson, Roxbury Motel owner, Susan Kenney, Executive Director of RAG; Yvonne Reuter, Interior Designer and Gail Lennstrom, MARK Board member.
This summer, three teams of prominent designers, builders, artists, and local students have two days and one-thousand dollars each to design and renovate three vacant storefronts in a Catskills village. On four open-house weekends, area visitors, residents, and press will tour the stores and imagine a village transformed by exciting new design. At a gala awards event a public vote and juried review will decide the winning team, sending the winning student to college with a scholarship.

Sponsored by the MARK Project and made possible by a generous grant from the O’Connor Foundation.

The Re-Store Design Challenge is a renovation competition event for villages and hamlets in the Delaware County region of the Catskill Mountains. The challenge enables the main streets of these areas to dream what could be with exuberant entrepreneurial spirit and creative design – bringing the best of the area’s historical provenance to its potential as the unspoiled tourism draw of a region with 20 million residents. It is intended to provide an opportunity for these municipalities to renovate vacant storefronts, boost tourism, garner press attention, generate foot traffic, and encourage landlords and business owners to capitalize on the often overlooked potential of these main streets. By using nationally recognized talent with local ties, the competition will showcase the wealth of skills that already exist in our region and will encourage those considering investment opportunities to “buy local first”.

The location for the competition (“municipality”) will be chosen through a competitive application process determined by the administrator. Applications will be reviewed by a team of judges selected by the administrator. Applications will be due by May 1st. Winning municipality will be selected by May 15th. Pertinent qualifications include: available vacant storefronts, volunteer availability, awards event location availability, and willingness to promote event.
